Jeans: an endless love story

Jeans: an endless love story

Denim fabric originally comes from the Maritime Republic of Genoa. The word jeans (or blue jeans) is believed to come directly from the French “Bleu de Gênes,” meaning “Genoa blue.” In the ancient world, fabrics were commonly named after the place they were made. Because the classic five-pocket jeans cut was produced so widely and became so successful in denim, the two ideas got mixed up: denim is the fabric, and not necessarily blue; jeans is the cut of the pants, whatever the fabric.

Jeans started out as sturdy work pants. In the 1800s Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis created the famous “blue jeans.” Over time, for the Beat Generation and especially for writer Jack Kerouac, they became a symbol of rebellion and nonconformity. From the '90s on they became a garment for every occasion, with embellishments, rhinestones and special washes.

Our clothing manufacturing company specializes in developing all kinds of jeans. The best-known jeans styles, which we produce all the time, are:

Skinny jeans: by far the tightest of all styles on the market. They follow the body perfectly and wrap the legs and seat like a second skin.
Slim fit: slim fit jeans are close-fitting and follow the body down to the calf, but stay slightly straighter in the last part of the leg without hugging it completely.
Regular: the most classic, they hold up against sudden trend changes. They have a fairly straight leg and flatter the figure without restricting movement.
Straight jeans: jeans with a straight, not too wide leg. The leg width stays the same from seat to ankle.
Kick flare: fitted down to the knee, then flares out at the calf like a little bell.
Flare jeans: the most flared of all. The leg widens from the knee, forming a sort of “bell” shape.
Bootcut: halfway between flare and straight, less flared than the first and less straight than the second. Bootcut jeans narrow slightly at the knee and then widen again to fit over a boot (hence the name), but without overdoing it.
Wide: when the leg gets even wider while still flared, we can talk about wide jeans. Wide from seat to hem, these pants always reach the floor. Their length often means wearing them with high heels.
Boyfriend jeans: these jeans get their name because they look like they came out of his closet. They're roomy at the hips and wide in the leg, with a high waist and a low crotch. They're almost always worn with the hem rolled up.
Mom jeans: soft, roomy and high-waisted. Slimmer than boyfriend jeans, they also have a higher crotch and a less masculine cut.
Baggy jeans: roomy from waist to ankle, where they narrow slightly. They always have a fairly low crotch and a rather high waist.
