A well-made leather garment lasts for many years and gets better with time. It just needs a little attention. These are the tips we also give the brands we work with, to pass on to their customers.
Hang the garment on a wide, shaped hanger that supports the shoulders well. Avoid plastic bags: leather needs to breathe. A cotton or non-woven garment bag is better, in a cool, dry closet away from heat sources.
If you get caught in the rain, blot the water with a soft cloth and let the garment dry on a hanger at room temperature. Never on a radiator or with a hair dryer: heat dries out the leather and makes it stiff.
For dust, a soft dry cloth is all you need. For small stains, a slightly damp cloth, without rubbing. Don't use general household cleaners, which can stain or fade the leather.
Once or twice a year you can use a leather conditioner, testing it first on a hidden area. Nubuck and suede need their own products and brushes instead.
For grease, ink or wine stains, or a full cleaning, go to a cleaner that specializes in leather. Machine washing or standard dry cleaning almost always ruins a leather garment.
With this care, the leather softens and takes the shape of the person wearing it.
