Tartan is a piece of fabric (historically made of wool) made up of brightly colored stripes arranged in set patterns called “setts.” They cross each other to form colored checks.
The kilt, the traditional skirt worn by men in the past and now part of Scottish folklore, is made of tartan.
Today tartan also means any colorful, multi-toned fabric. Originally the fabric was a Scottish-patterned wool, while today the name is used for checked fabrics in cotton, blends or synthetics.
True tartan is a high-quality wool, and the woven checks are always well matched, so they give excellent results for skirts, pants, coats, capes and more.
A tartan pattern is at the root of Burberry's success, the English brand that has managed to stay a classic while also being a protagonist of today's fashion scene. In the 1920s it first introduced the “Burberry Check” tartan in the lining of its raincoats. Since then the pattern has become an instantly recognizable fashion signature. Every Fall/Winter season tartan is confirmed as a trend, used by brands in highly creative versions.
